Manila, Dec 9 (NationPress) The Kanlaon volcano in the Philippines erupted on Monday, ejecting a towering column of ash and gas into the atmosphere, as reported by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.

An explosive eruption transpired at the summit vent of the Kanlaon Volcano on Monday afternoon, according to an alert issued by the institute.

The eruption generated a substantial plume that swiftly ascended to an altitude of 3,000 metres above the vent and drifted in a west-southwest direction, as reported by the Xinhua news agency.

Kanlaon, also recognized as Mount Kanlaon, is an active andesitic stratovolcano and is the tallest mountain on the island of Negros in the Philippines, reaching an elevation of 2,465 metres above sea level. It ranks as the 42nd-highest peak of any island globally.

This volcano lies on the border of the provinces of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental, situated approximately 30 kilometres southeast of Bacolod, the capital and most populous city of Negros Occidental and the entire island. It is among the active volcanoes in the Philippines and part of the Pacific Ring of Fire.
