Evacuation of 87,000 Individuals Due to Eruption of Kanlaon Volcano in the Philippines

Manila, Dec 9 (NationPress) The Philippine office of civil defence has initiated an urgent evacuation for roughly 87,000 residents due to the recent eruption of Kanlaon Volcano.

The volcano, located in the central Philippines, erupted on Monday afternoon, releasing a massive plume that soared 3,000 meters into the sky, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.

The institute elevated the alert level to three on a five-point scale, cautioning that a magmatic eruption has commenced, which could escalate to more violent eruptions.

Residents residing within a 6-km radius of the volcano's summit are urged to evacuate, as the institute warned that the public should prepare for additional evacuations if the situation worsens.

Television reports indicated that black ash from the eruption has covered nearby villages, as noted by the Xinhua news agency.

Local news outlets have mentioned that officials are bracing for a potential increase in the alert level to four, which would require further evacuations.

Just hours prior to the explosive eruption, state volcanologists detected six volcanic earthquakes and recorded a 16-minute-long ash emission.

Kanlaon Volcano last erupted in June of this year. This volcano, which spans the provinces of Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental on Negros Island, is among the nation’s most active volcanoes.
