Damascus, Jan 9 (NationPress) European Council President Antonio Costa along with European Union (EU) chief Ursula von der Leyen visited Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa on Friday, reaffirming the EU's strong dedication to Syria's recovery, reconstruction, and civil peace.

There is still a long way ahead but you have already taken the first steps," Antonio Costa posted on X after his meeting with Ahmed al-Sharaa.
The EU has also committed to enhancing political relationships and economic cooperation with the war-torn nation.
"In Damascus today with EU Council President. After decades of fear and silence, Syrians began a long journey toward hope and renewal. Europe will do everything it can to support Syria's recovery and reconstruction," stated Ursula von der Leyen.
Both leaders arrived in Damascus following their participation in the inaugural EU-Jordan Summit, emphasizing the EU's commitment to Jordan as a vital strategic ally in the Middle East and Mediterranean.
On Thursday, Antonio Costa and Ursula von der Leyen met with King Abdullah II as the three leaders evaluated the implementation of the Strategic and Comprehensive Partnership, which was signed a year ago, and outlined future priorities.
"At a time of growing geopolitical challenges, the EU and Jordan stand side by side. Because this is what friends do," the EU chief shared on X.
Later today, the two European leaders will head to Beirut to engage with President Aoun and further enhance the EU-Lebanon partnership, focusing on prosperity, security, and stability.
