EU Urges Rapid and Systematic Resolution Following President Yoon's Impeachment in South Korea

Seoul, Dec 14 (NationPress) The European Union (EU) on Saturday emphasized the need for a 'swift and orderly resolution' in South Korea, in accordance with its constitution, after the parliamentary decision to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol.
"The EU acknowledges the National Assembly's decision to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol. It is crucial now to facilitate a swift and orderly resolution to the ongoing political turmoil respecting the Korean Constitution," stated an EU spokesperson in a formal announcement.
"The Republic of Korea is a significant strategic ally for the EU," the statement continued, as reported by the Yonhap news agency.
On Saturday, the National Assembly voted to impeach President Yoon due to his mishandling of the martial law declaration, thus suspending him from his responsibilities until the Constitutional Court determines his reinstatement or removal from office.
The impeachment motion against Yoon was approved with a vote of 204-85, which included three abstentions and eight invalid ballots, after all 300 members cast their votes.
This motion passed just 11 days after Yoon unexpectedly declared martial law, an announcement that astonished the nation and provoked public outrage, as military personnel surrounded the National Assembly premises in an apparent effort to prevent lawmakers from rescinding the decree.
The martial law order, which was revoked within six hours after being voted down by the Assembly, has sparked investigations by police, prosecutors, and the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials to ascertain whether Yoon orchestrated an insurrection. He is currently prohibited from leaving the country.
In a televised address from his home, Yoon remarked that he is 'pausing momentarily' but will not abandon the path he has embarked upon with the citizens towards the future.
"I will never give up," he asserted. "I will welcome all criticism, support, and encouragement directed towards me and will strive for the nation until the end."
