Explosion in The Hague Apartment Complex Results in Fatality

The Hague, Dec 8 (NationPress) An explosion in an apartment complex in The Hague has resulted in at least one fatality, according to Mayor Jan van Zanen, who mentioned that rescue teams are diligently searching for any other potential victims trapped in the rubble.

"We are preparing for a prolonged operation," stated van Zanen during a press conference on Saturday. "In any case, the search will continue through the night."

The identity of the deceased has not yet been confirmed, as reported by the Xinhua news agency.

Several individuals with injuries have been transported to the hospital for medical attention.

Emergency personnel reported uncertainty regarding how many individuals remain buried under the debris, but estimates suggest the number of victims could rise to around 20.

"The reality is that their chances of survival are very slim. We are preparing for the worst-case scenario," the mayor stated.

He noted that there are currently no signs of suspicious activity in the vicinity, although this will be a focus of the ongoing investigation.

The incident transpired on Tarwekamp Street in the northeastern Mariahoeve district of The Hague. Visuals from the scene depict that the facade of several apartments has been significantly damaged.

The building comprises shops on the ground floor and two residential levels above. The cause of the explosion remains unknown.

Authorities reported that a vehicle was observed speeding away from the scene shortly after the explosion. They are urging anyone who may have witnessed the vehicle to come forward.
