Dutch Authorities Initiate Criminal Investigation Following Fatal Explosion in The Hague

The Hague, Dec 9 (NationPress) Dutch officials have launched a criminal inquiry into a tragic explosion in The Hague that has resulted in the deaths of five individuals, as stated by the country's chief public prosecutor.
Chief Prosecutor Margreet Froberg disclosed during a press briefing on Sunday, The cause of the explosion remains undetermined. “Nevertheless, there are indications of criminal activity, prompting us to begin a criminal investigation.”
The explosion took place in the northeastern Mariahoeve district, leading to a partial collapse of an apartment building located on Tarwekamp Street, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
This incident impacted five residences, resulting in five fatalities, while five others were successfully rescued. Among the rescued, four individuals have been hospitalized, and efforts are ongoing to locate any additional victims.
Earlier on Sunday, Prime Minister Dick Schoof and Minister of Justice and Security David van Weel visited the site of the disaster.
Van Weel also conveyed his concerns regarding possible criminal involvement.
During the press conference, Police Chief Karin Krukkert announced that investigators are actively searching for the driver of a vehicle seen rapidly departing from the vicinity shortly after the explosion. A burnt-out vehicle was later found nearby, heightening suspicions.
The Mayor of The Hague Jan van Zanen remarked during the conference, “This is an unprecedented disaster.” He added, “The suffering is immeasurable.”
The investigation into the cause of the explosion is still ongoing, and rescue and recovery operations are continuing through the night.
