Vientiane, Aug 29 (NationPress) A series of intense rainstorms have resulted in flash flooding across various regions of Laos, wreaking havoc on homes, infrastructure, and agricultural land. Authorities are on high alert for additional flood threats as the rain persists.
The Laos meteorological office has issued warnings regarding the impending effects of Typhoon Kajiki, which is set to unleash severe thunderstorms, heavy precipitation, and high winds throughout many parts of Laos from August 25 to August 31.
In the central region, specifically Khammuan province, torrential downpours have resulted in flooding across eight villages. In response, local officials and disaster management teams have mobilized to provide relief, including clearing obstructed drainage systems to restore water flow.
Flash floods have also struck Xaysomboun province following continuous rainfall, leading to overflowing rivers that have submerged homes and roads. Residents in low-lying and riverside areas are being urged to remain vigilant, as continued rainfall heightens the risk of more flash floods and landslides.
Additionally, a tropical depression is projected to move into Laos, bringing further heavy rain to the central and southern regions from Friday through Sunday. This storm is anticipated to significantly impact the capital city of Vientiane and various provinces.
The Laos weather bureau has issued a flood alert as river levels continue to rise and exceed warning thresholds in certain areas.
A report from the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology under the Lao Ministry of Agriculture and Environment indicated that river levels in Khammuan province have reached 19.42 meters, surpassing the warning level of 19 meters, as reported by Xinhua.
Residents near riverbanks and in low-lying areas have been cautioned to remain alert, as ongoing heavy rainfall in the coming days could escalate the flooding risk.
Not only in Laos, but heavy rains have also triggered floods and landslides in eight provinces of Thailand, affecting over 180 households. Typhoon Kajiki has also had repercussions in China.
In Vietnam, the impacts of Kajiki and its resultant flooding have resulted in damage to over 10,000 homes and offices, along with affecting more than 86 hectares of rice and cash crops, according to a statement from the Vietnamese government on Wednesday.
