Vientiane, July 24 (NationPress) After days of relentless heavy rainfall, numerous provinces in Laos are currently facing severe flooding and elevated river levels, causing significant harm to residences, farmland, and transportation systems.

In the wake of Typhoon Wipha, critical flooding has adversely affected Luang Prabang, Huaphan, Xieng Khuang, Xayabouly, Khammuan, and Vientiane provinces. Local officials are aiding families in relocating their belongings and livestock while vigilantly monitoring river levels.

The Lao weather bureau has issued a warning for ongoing rain, thunder, lightning, and powerful winds, particularly impacting northern and central regions, as per the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology under the Lao Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment on Thursday.

River levels are steadily rising, with the Luang Prabang river reaching 16.62 meters, nearing the warning level of 17.50 meters and approaching a danger level of 18 meters. In some areas, including Xayabouly and Vientiane, river levels have already exceeded the danger threshold.

Officials are advising residents near rivers and in low-lying areas to stay alert and prepare for possible landslides and flash floods as heavy rains continue.

Natthaphone, a 27-year-old worker from the Lao capital Vientiane, who frequently travels for seminars and meetings, voiced his increasing anxiety regarding the persistent rainfall and its implications for travel safety on Tuesday.

"Given the ongoing rain, I am particularly worried about the potential for roadblocks or landslides along the routes. Flooded or compromised roads could delay travel or even cause accidents," Natthaphone shared with Xinhua news agency on Tuesday.

He also highlighted broader implications for infrastructure, agriculture, tourism, and transportation.

Jib, a vendor at a night market in Vientiane, expressed her distress over the continuous heavy rain, which has led to fewer people on the streets and left her stall quiet.

"When it rains heavily, fewer customers come out, and it significantly impacts my sales. If this situation continues, I'm concerned it could harm the local economy as well," she stated.

She fears that strong winds and heavy rainfall could damage her stall and result in further financial losses.

"In these challenging times, we all need to be vigilant and support each other in safeguarding our homes and communities. Everyone plays a role, whether it’s clearing drains, staying informed, or assisting neighbors in need," she added.

Amid ongoing disaster preparedness initiatives, Lao authorities have cautioned the public, particularly those residing near riverbanks, to remain alert, as heavy rains, strong winds, and rising water levels could lead to widespread flooding.

The Central Disaster Management Committee issued an urgent directive on Monday, urging all authorities to inform the public, identify evacuation sites, secure valuables and pets, and closely monitor weather and river levels to remain prepared for landslides, flash floods, and strong winds.

Point of View
