Islamabad, April 3 (NationPress) The government of Pakistan has declared a significant hike in fuel prices, with petrol increasing by 43% and high-speed diesel (HSD) surging by 55%, as reported by local media sources.
The cost of petrol has jumped by PKR 137.23 per litre, moving from PKR 321.17 to PKR 458.41, while the price for HSD has escalated by PKR 184.49 per litre, rising from PKR 335.86 to PKR 520.35, according to Pakistan's leading daily, Dawn. To mitigate the impact of rising diesel prices on transportation and freight, the petroleum levy rates were modified. The levy on petrol was increased to PKR 160 per litre from PKR 105, while the levy on diesel was eliminated, reduced from PKR 55, as noted by sources cited by Dawn.
In comments made on Thursday night, Pakistan's Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik stated that these “difficult and responsible” decisions came after consultations with key figures including the president, prime minister, military leaders, and provincial chief ministers.
He indicated that the objective of this decision was to limit subsidies to those most in need, while also maintaining fiscal discipline and safeguarding the economic stability achieved in recent years under international obligations.
Furthermore, the Pakistan government unveiled targeted relief initiatives, which include a subsidy of PKR 100 per litre for two-wheeler users, capped at 20 litres per month for three months. Small farmers will receive a one-time subsidy of PKR 1,500 per acre during the harvest period. Additionally, inter-city and goods transport that relies on diesel will receive a subsidy of PKR 100 per litre.
Moreover, trains that transport 80-85% of food items will get direct support of PKR 70,000 per month, while large transport vehicles will receive PKR 80,000 per month and inter-city public service vehicles will be allocated PKR 100,000 per month.
