German and French Foreign Ministers in Syria, Commit to Supporting 'Peaceful Transition'

Damascus, Jan 3 (NationPress) German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and her French counterpart Jean-Noel Barrot landed in Damascus on Friday for pivotal discussions with Syria's interim administration, led by Ahmed al-Sharaa.

This visit is one of the most significant diplomatic engagements from the West since the previous government's fall.

According to local news sources like al-Watan Online and Syria TV, Baerbock noted that the EU perceives potential for a renewed political relationship with Syria, stressing that the Syrian people now have an opportunity to shape their country's future following the challenging Assad era.

She further stated that Germany aims to assist the new administration in achieving a comprehensive and peaceful transfer of power while providing support for reconstruction efforts.

Barrot emphasized a dedication to enhancing Syria's journey towards stability, as reported by Xinhua.

"Our goal is to facilitate a peaceful transition that is advantageous for both the Syrian populace and regional security," remarked the French minister.

The two officials are scheduled to confer with al-Sharaa, the leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham.

Since December 8, multiple diplomatic delegations from Arab and Western nations, including the United States, have visited Syria to engage with the new authorities.

On Wednesday, Oman's Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad bin Hamood Albusaidi emphasized the significance of collaborative efforts for development and stability in Syria and the surrounding region.

During a phone discussion with Syria's interim Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan Al-Shaibani, Albusaidi reaffirmed Oman's steadfast support for the Syrian people.
