Key Takeaways
Dhaka, Feb 10 (NationPress) Amid the alarming trend of violence against minorities in Bangladesh, another Hindu individual was brutally murdered by assailants in his business premises located in Trishal upazila of Mymensingh district, local media outlets reported on Tuesday.
The victim has been identified as 62-year-old Sushen Chandra Sarkar, who operated a business called "Ms. Bhai Bhai Enterprises" in Trishal.
This tragic event took place on Monday night at the Bogar Bazar intersection, where the attackers also reportedly looted several lakhs of Bangladeshi taka during the incident.
Only three days prior to the national elections, this incident sheds light on the worrying escalation of violence directed towards Hindu communities across Bangladesh.
According to family members and police reports, as cited by Bangladeshi media outlet ITV, the assailants attacked Sarkar with a sharp weapon at the Bogar Bazar intersection and left him inside the shop after shuttering it. His family later found him bleeding and rushed him to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where he was pronounced dead by medical staff.
“We had no conflicts with anyone. After brutally murdering my father, the assailants stole several lakhs of taka from the shop. Our rice business has been running for many years. We demand severe punishment for these criminals,” ITV quoted the victim's son, Sujan Sarkar.
Trishal Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Muhammad Firoz Hossain confirmed the event, stating, “The assailants attacked him with a sharp weapon around 11 PM and then closed the shop's shutter. The family found him covered in blood when they opened it. The police are currently investigating the scene and legal proceedings are underway.”
On January 9, India expressed its deep concerns regarding the recurrent violence targeting minorities, especially Hindus, in Bangladesh, asserting that it continues to monitor the situation in the neighboring country and hopes for decisive action against such communal violence.
Bangladesh has seen rising violence against minorities, including Hindus, under the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, which has sparked outrage among citizens and various global human rights organizations.
