During his visit, he met with Prime Minister James Marape and extended greetings from PM Modi and the Indian populace on this significant occasion.
Margherita emphasized the commitment of both nations to strengthening bilateral and people-to-people connections.
“I was honored to meet with Hon‘ble James Marape, Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea, and conveyed heartfelt wishes from PM Shri Narendra Modi and the people of India 🇮🇳 on this momentous 50th anniversary of PNG,” he posted on X.
President Droupadi Murmu also relayed warm greetings from the Indian government to Sir Bob Bofeng Dadae, Papua New Guinea's Governor-General, to commemorate the 50th year of independence, as stated by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
Margherita's visit was a continuation of the momentum established by PM Modi during his historic trip to Papua New Guinea in 2023, where both countries pledged to strengthen bilateral ties, expand development partnerships, and enhance defense cooperation.
PM Modi visited Port Moresby to co-host the FIPIC III Summit alongside James Marape. The FIPIC, launched in 2014, involves India and 14 Pacific Island Countries, including the Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, the Republic of Marshall Islands, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu.
