New Delhi, Aug 16 (NationPress) Emphasizing that a swift resolution to the Ukraine conflict is a global priority, India expressed its approval on Saturday regarding the Summit taking place in Alaska between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Their commitment to pursuing peace is notably commendable.
"India appreciates the Summit meeting in Alaska between US President Donald Trump and President Vladimir Putin of Russia. Their commendable leadership in the pursuit of peace is recognized. India values the advancements made during the Summit. The path forward is achievable only through dialogue and diplomacy. The world is eager for a rapid conclusion to the Ukraine conflict," stated Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
The discussions took place at the Arctic Warrior Convention Centre in the early hours of Saturday, according to Indian time. The meeting included participation from Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Presidential Aide Yury Ushakov, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff.
Both leaders reported progress in their three-hour discussions aimed at concluding the Ukraine War, although an immediate ceasefire was not declared.
"It's not finalized yet at all,” Trump remarked during a Fox News interview after Friday's summit in Alaska. "And Ukraine must agree. President [Volodymyr] Zelensky has to consent."
"We had an excellent meeting today, and I believe numerous points were discussed for the benefit of Ukraine,” he added.
On August 9, India had previously welcomed the summit between the US President and his Russian counterpart in Alaska.
"India endorses the agreement reached between the United States and the Russian Federation for a meeting in Alaska on August 15, 2025. This meeting carries the potential to end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and opens avenues for peace. As Prime Minister Narendra Modi has articulated on multiple occasions, ‘This is not a time for war,’" stated Jaiswal.
The MEA statement from New Delhi affirmed its support for the upcoming Summit and expressed readiness to assist in these efforts.
On August 8, Putin reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to brief him on the developments and forthcoming discussions.
"Considering the special privileged partnership between Russia and India, Vladimir Putin shared key outcomes from his meeting with US President's Special Envoy Steven Witkoff that took place on August 6 in Moscow. The Prime Minister expressed gratitude to the President of Russia for the update and reiterated India's steadfast commitment to resolving the situation in Ukraine through political and diplomatic channels. Additionally, Vladimir Putin and Narendra Modi exchanged thoughts on significant bilateral issues, including trade, economic, and investment cooperation," the Kremlin's statement post-call with PM Modi concluded.
