New Delhi, Aug 9 (NationPress) On Saturday, India expressed its enthusiasm for the upcoming summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, set to occur in Alaska on August 15, 2025.

India welcomes the consensus achieved between the United States and Russia for this meeting, which could potentially end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and pave the way for peace. As Prime Minister Narendra Modi has consistently stated, ‘This is not an era of war,’ according to a statement from Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.

The MEA's announcement reaffirmed India's support for the upcoming summit and its readiness to aid in these diplomatic efforts.

Earlier today, Trump revealed plans for a summit with Russia, which could also influence the 25 percent punitive tariff that the U.S. has imposed on India for purchasing Russian oil.

Amid rapid developments, Trump announced on Truth Social on Friday, “The much-anticipated meeting with President Putin will occur next Friday, August 15, 2025, in the Great State of Alaska.”

He added, “Further details to follow.”

This announcement marked a swift change in tone as Trump had expressed disappointment with Putin just the day before while still discussing progress in their talks.

As part of the summit preparations, Putin reached out to Prime Minister Modi on Friday evening, providing insights into his discussions with the U.S. President regarding Ukraine.

The Kremlin's report on their conversation indicated, “Given the special privileged partnership between Russia and India, President Putin shared key outcomes from his meeting with U.S. President's Special Envoy Steven Witkoff.”

India’s External Affairs Ministry expressed gratitude to President Putin for his detailed insights, with the Prime Minister reiterating India's long-standing position advocating for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

Trump had set a deadline on Friday for imposing additional sanctions on Moscow, including secondary tariffs on nations purchasing energy from Russia.

The groundwork for the summit was laid during Witkoff’s meeting with Putin in Moscow on Wednesday.

Trump remarked, “We had some very productive discussions with President Putin” and emphasized that “there is a very good chance” that peace is imminent.

Addressing the media on Friday, Trump hinted at a possible agreement, stating, “There will be some territorial adjustments for the benefit of both parties.”
