“This is merely the beginning. Our strategic partnership will continue to strengthen,” she noted.
The agreement will eliminate tariffs on 97% of India's exports, representing a significant advantage for Indian manufacturing sectors, particularly in textiles, gems, and leather, while also granting access to European vehicles and machinery for the Indian market.
European Council President Antonio Costa expressed enthusiasm for “a more robust partnership between the European Union and India, grounded in shared values and increased ambition.”

PM Modi facilitated the 16th European Union-India Summit in New Delhi, alongside President von der Leyen and President Costa, to unveil this “mother of all trade deals”.
The agreement is anticipated to be implemented next year and is expected to substantially enhance bilateral relations across multiple sectors.
The primary focus of the meeting on Tuesday included trade, defense and security, climate change, critical technologies, and the reinforcement of a rules-based global order. Additionally, both parties plan to introduce a defense framework agreement and a strategic agenda. This new alliance emerges as Europe aims to lessen its reliance on the US and China while strengthening its diplomatic and economic relationships with other regions.
