Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Nairobi, Jan 22 (NationPress) This week, India and Kenya engaged in extensive discussions aimed at enhancing their bilateral defence cooperation. The focus was on defence industrial collaboration, capacity building, training, sustainment partnerships, information sharing, and long-term collaboration in defence exports and maintenance support.
The talks occurred during a visit to Nairobi by a four-member delegation from the Ministry of Defence to bolster bilateral defence industrial ties. The Indian delegation, headed by Sanjeev Kumar, Defence Production Secretary, participated in various significant meetings during its visit from January 19-21, as reported by the High Commission of India in Nairobi.
During this visit, Kumar represented India's defence manufacturing and export landscape at the 3rd India–Kenya Defence Exhibition and Seminar, held in Nairobi on January 19. This event was co-hosted by the High Commission of India in Kenya and the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), with assistance from the Department of Defence Production, Ministry of Defence, Government of India. Previous editions took place in 2022 and 2024.
The Exhibition and Seminar were jointly inaugurated by Soipan Tuya, Kenya's Cabinet Secretary for Defence, alongside Sanjeev Kumar and the High Commissioner of India to Kenya. The event featured 21 Indian defence companies, both from public and private sectors, displaying various defence platforms, systems, and advanced manufacturing abilities. The companies showcased their offerings under the banner of FICCI, emphasizing India’s 'Make in India' initiative and export-ready defence solutions.
On the sidelines of the event, Secretary Kumar engaged with senior Kenyan defence officials, including Patrick Mariru, Principal Defence Secretary, and Lt Gen John Omenda, Vice Chief of Defence Forces, as well as other high-ranking officers.
Kumar also paid tribute at the Joint India–Africa Commemorative Pillar located at Mile 27, a memorial established by the Government of India. This monument, unveiled on June 23, 2025, honors the unknown Indian and Kenyan soldiers of the First World War and symbolizes a legacy of shared sacrifice and enduring partnership.
The delegation visited Kenya Shipyard Limited (KSL) in Mtongwe, where discussions underscored the potential for cooperation under the MoU signed between Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) and KSL in August 2023, particularly focusing on shipbuilding, repair, and sustainment.
India and Kenya maintain long-standing friendly relations, with defence cooperation being an essential component of their bilateral partnership. The visit by the Secretary (Defence Production) further solidified the momentum in India–Kenya defence interactions and opened avenues for deeper defence industrial collaboration, in line with India’s expanding defence alliances with African nations.
