Madrid, Jan 14 (NationPress) External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has highlighted India's increasing global influence and its capacity to offer significant support during tough times.

While addressing the Indian community during his visit to Spain, Jaishankar noted that India-Spain relations are on the brink of major progress.

Discussing his interactions with Spain's diplomatic circles, Jaishankar revealed that he was invited by Spain's Foreign Minister to speak to the nation's ambassadors at an international gathering.

"This is the first occasion a foreign ambassador has been invited to address Spain's global ambassadors," he remarked.

Pointing to India's growing significance, he stated, "When a foreign ministry and the ambassadors of another country invite you to speak, it merits consideration. India's current positioning is crucial. Given the present global scenario, all nations recognize that maintaining strong ties with India serves their interests."

The External Affairs Minister characterized India as a 'new India', acknowledged worldwide for its economic prowess and leadership.

"Currently, we are the fifth-largest economy, on track to become the third-largest. The international community is aware of our position, capabilities, and ideas. India is now perceived as a contributor to global discussions," he stated.

He emphasized India's unique capacity to engage with various nations.

"Few countries can converse with Russia and Ukraine; Israel and Iran; while being members of both Quad and BRICS. PM Modi is adept at navigating both sides," he noted, adding that India's approach to global issues is guided by the principle of 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas', which the world has come to appreciate.

Jaishankar acknowledged India's efforts in advocating for Africa's inclusion in the G20 and reflected on the nation's role during the Covid-19 pandemic.

"Globally, numerous countries assert, 'If we received our vaccine, it was thanks to India.' I recall President Sanchez reaching out to PM Modi for Hydroxychloroquine supplies," he stated.

He affirmed India's readiness to assist others in crisis, asserting, "In tough times, there exists a nation called India, eager to engage and support various parties. It transcends mere monetary or resource assistance; it is about heart and mindset—having the competence, thoughtfulness, and credibility to serve as a bridge."

Regarding trade, Jaishankar underscored the robust economic connections between India and Spain, with current bilateral trade valued at 10 billion euros annually.

"There is potential for growth," he mentioned, citing emerging areas of collaboration such as railways, automobiles, clean technologies, and space.

"The current global landscape is unstable. In these times, nations that are in proximity and believe that supply chains and relationships can be strengthened will foster closer ties. The estimated 10 billion euros may rise in the future," he added.

Expressing gratitude for the contributions of the Indian diaspora, Jaishankar acknowledged their role in fortifying India's foreign policy.

"Minister Albares inquired about my activities, and I mentioned meeting with members of the Indian community. I received positive feedback about the community... It's something I consistently hear worldwide, and it brings me joy. I want to extend my thanks to all of you," he stated.

He referred to the recently concluded Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, congratulated winners from Spain, and expressed appreciation for their efforts in enhancing India's global presence.

On the topic of people-to-people connections, Jaishankar announced the imminent establishment of a Spanish consulate in Bengaluru, calling it a "positive sign" for deepening India-Spain relations. He remarked, "Business is expanding significantly."

Looking forward, Jaishankar revealed plans for 2026 to be designated a "dual year" celebrating culture, artificial intelligence, and tourism in both nations. "This will have a long-term beneficial impact on our ties," he concluded.
