United Nations, Sep 27 (NationPress) External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar engaged with numerous foreign ministers at the high-level session of the General Assembly, aiming to enhance India's diplomatic relations and understand their perspectives on global issues.
He took part in discussions involving three key groups: BRICS, an alliance of major emerging economies; IBSA, representing India, Brazil, and South Africa; and a joint meeting with CELAC, the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States.
The agenda prominently featured the need for reforming multilateral institutions, along with trade discussions.
Among the notable diplomats Jaishankar met was Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
Jaishankar mentioned on X that they had a constructive conversation about bilateral relations, the Ukraine situation, and developments in the Middle East.
In his meeting with UAE Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, they exchanged views on their bilateral cooperation in preparation for the upcoming Joint Commission, a platform for enhancing their relations.
He expressed appreciation for Al Nahyan’s insights on recent developments.
Austria’s Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger thanked Jaishankar for their “thought-provoking discussion.”
“Enhancing our strong partnership—both with Austria and from a European standpoint—is undoubtedly in our mutual interest,” she remarked in a post on X.
Jaishankar shared that they had a “vibrant discussion on contemporary geopolitics and the options available for India and Europe.”
He also interacted with Foreign Ministers Paul Chet Greene from Antigua and Barbuda, Mario Lubetkin from Uruguay, Sugiono from Indonesia, Timothy Musa Kabba from Sierra Leone, and Toiu Oana from Romania.
At the India-CELAC meeting, co-chaired with Colombia’s Foreign Minister Rosa Yolanda Villavicencio, Jaishankar stated on X that they concurred on the urgent need for reforming multilateral institutions to better represent the Global South.
“We committed to bolster our extensive cooperation in areas such as agriculture, trade, health, digital initiatives, HADR (Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief), and capacity building,” he mentioned.
They also planned to explore collaboration in emerging fields like AI, technology, critical minerals, space, and renewable energy, he added.
