Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 21 (NationPress) In a significant meeting on Wednesday, External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar emphasized the necessity for enhanced cooperation between India and Spain to address mutual challenges, especially in the realm of terrorism, amidst the evolving global landscape.
During his opening remarks with Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares in New Delhi, the EAM stated, "The global order is clearly witnessing a profound transformation. It is now more essential than ever for nations to unite against shared challenges. This is particularly true in the fight against terrorism, as both India and Spain have suffered from its impacts. The world must adopt a stance of zero tolerance towards terrorism."
EAM Jaishankar highlighted the cordial and amicable relations between the two nations, founded on mutual democratic values and a commitment to multilateralism and a rules-based international order.
He pointed out that this year marks the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Spain.
“Our political interactions have steadily increased, characterized by frequent high-level exchanges. India and Spain will commemorate the 70th anniversary of our diplomatic ties this year, alongside a dual celebration of cultural tourism and artificial intelligence. This initiative showcases our dedication to merging our rich cultural heritage with forward-looking collaboration,” the EAM remarked.
Highlighting India's upcoming AI Impact Summit next month, EAM Jaishankar mentioned that the country’s approach to AI is centered on humanity, inclusivity, and ethical responsibility -- values that align closely with those of Europe.
He further noted that the economic partnership is a vital component of their bilateral relations.
“Spain ranks among India's key trading partners within the EU, with our bilateral trade surpassing US $8 billion in recent years. Spanish firms have established a notable presence in India, particularly in sectors like infrastructure, renewable energy, urban mobility engineering, water management, and smart cities. Conversely, Indian companies are active in Spain in fields such as IT, pharmaceuticals, and automotive components. There is substantial potential to enhance this business collaboration,” he added.
Stressing the deepening defense ties between the two countries, EAM Jaishankar remarked, “We anticipate the first Made in India C295 aircraft to roll off the production line before September this year. This signifies the increasing depth of our defense industrial collaboration and our commitment to developing resilient manufacturing capabilities.”
He underscored that the bilateral partnership is enriched by strong cultural connections, noting the popularity of yoga, Ayurveda, and Indian culture in Spain, as well as the rising interest in Spanish language and culture within India, reflecting profound people-to-people ties.
“Tourism represents another significant and growing aspect of our partnership. The connections between our peoples act as a living bridge between India and Spain. We are dedicated to facilitating greater mobility, educational exchanges, and institutional partnerships,” the EAM concluded.
