Suva (Fiji), Jan 24 (NationPress) India has reiterated its enduring dedication to Fiji and the broader Pacific region, emphasizing that the bilateral relations between the two nations are entering a transformative era of collaboration based on trust, shared values, and people-to-people connections, as reported by Fijian media.

During India's Republic Day celebration held at the Novotel Lami in Fiji on Friday evening (local time), Indian High Commissioner to Fiji Suneet Mehta expressed that India and Fiji are collaboratively working to create a future that provides real benefits for their citizens, according to local media outlet, The Fiji Times.

"Together, we will construct a future that is brighter, more prosperous, and more inclusive for our peoples," Mehta stated.

He acknowledged the profound historical ties between the two countries, emphasizing the lasting contributions of the Girmitiya community to Fiji's social, cultural, and economic growth.

"The Indian diaspora in Fiji has been a pillar of our relationship since the 19th century, and today it continues to play a vital role in agriculture, trade, education, and public service," he added.

According to the Indian High Commission in Suva, Mehta stressed the importance of further enhancing the robust and multifaceted India-Fiji relationship for the benefit of both peoples, the region, and beyond.

The occasion further solidified the bonds of friendship, cooperation, and shared values, the Indian mission noted.

During this event, Mehta also described 2025 as a "landmark year" for bilateral relations, characterized by "sustained high-level political engagement."

He highlighted the visits by Fijian President Naiqama Lalabalavu (last November) and Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka (August 2025) to India, which led to significant agreements and a joint statement reaffirming Veilomani Dosti—friendship grounded in mutual respect, as reported by The Fiji Times.

Mehta also emphasized health cooperation as a "major highlight of the partnership," announcing India's commitment to constructing a 100-bed Super Specialty Hospital in Suva, which will function as a regional hub for advanced medical services in the island nation.

He further stated that this project reflects India's dedication to bolstering healthcare resilience in Fiji and the Pacific, noting that the tender process is in progress and construction will commence soon.

The High Commissioner underscored the necessity of expanding collaboration in fields such as agriculture, education, defense, and capacity building.

Mehta also pointed out India's expertise in renewable energy, digital technologies, and climate resilience, stating that these can provide new avenues for cooperation, both bilaterally and through regional and multilateral platforms.

"India is committed to collaborating with Fiji and other Pacific Island nations to foster sustainable growth, resilience, and shared prosperity," he affirmed, reiterating India's involvement through the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation.
