Suva (Fiji), Jan 24 (NationPress) India has reiterated its enduring commitment to Fiji and the broader Pacific region, emphasizing that the bilateral ties between the two nations are entering a new era of cooperation founded on trust, mutual values, and strong people-to-people connections, as reported by Fijian media.

During India's Republic Day celebration at Fiji's Novotel Lami on Friday evening (local time), the Indian High Commissioner to Fiji, Suneet Mehta, stated that India and Fiji are collaborating to create a future that brings real advantages to their populations, according to local media outlet, The Fiji Times.

"Together, we will construct a future that is brighter, more prosperous, and more inclusive for our citizens," Mehta declared.

He acknowledged the profound historical connections between the two nations, underlining the lasting impact of the Girmitiya community on Fiji's social, cultural, and economic landscape.

"The Indian diaspora in Fiji has been a foundation of our partnership since the 19th century and continues to play a vital role in agriculture, trade, education, and public service," he remarked.

The Indian High Commission in Suva noted that Mehta emphasized the importance of further enhancing the strong and diverse India-Fiji relationships for the benefit of both peoples, the region, and beyond.

The event further fortified the bonds of friendship, cooperation, and shared values, according to the Indian mission.

Mehta also designated 2025 as a significant milestone for bilateral relations, characterized by "sustained high-level political engagement."

He pointed out that the visits by Fijian President Naiqama Lalabalavu (last November) and Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka (August 2025) to India led to critical agreements and a joint statement affirming "Veilomani Dosti—friendship founded on mutual respect," as reported by The Fiji Times.

Mehta referred to health cooperation as a "key highlight" of the partnership, stating that India is dedicated to constructing a 100-bed Super Speciality Hospital in Suva, which will act as a regional center for advanced medical services in the island nation.

He further remarked that this initiative reflects India's commitment to enhancing healthcare resilience in Fiji and the Pacific, mentioning that the tender process is underway and construction will commence soon.

The High Commissioner also underscored the necessity for expanding collaboration in sectors like agriculture, education, defense, and capacity building.

Mehta additionally mentioned India's expertise in renewable energy, digital technologies, and climate resilience, stating that these could provide new opportunities for collaboration, both bilaterally and through regional and multilateral forums.

"India is dedicated to partnering with Fiji and other Pacific Island nations to foster sustainable growth, resilience, and shared prosperity," he affirmed, reiterating India's involvement through the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation.
