All Indian pilgrims successfully reached the sacred plains of Arafat in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, 27 May 2026, completing the most pivotal leg of the Haj 2026 pilgrimage in a timely and organised manner. The development was confirmed by Indian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Suhel Ajaz Khan, who is himself present at Arafat alongside the full Indian Haj mission.

The Day of Arafat: What It Means

The Day of Arafat is considered the spiritual centrepiece of the Haj pilgrimage. Pilgrims move from the tent city of Mina to the plains of Arafat to spend the day in prayer and reflection, before proceeding to Muzdalifah after sunset. Ambassador Khan described it as 'the most important day of the core Haj, where the entire pilgrimage moves from the tent city of Mina to Arafat.'

How Indian Pilgrims Were Moved

The Indian mission deployed both buses and trains to transport pilgrims from Mina to Arafat. According to Ambassador Khan, approximately 50 per cent of Indian pilgrims used the train network, while the remainder travelled by bus. 'Everyone is now in Arafat and dedicating themselves to the prayers,' he said. Indian Consul General of Jeddah Fahad Suri and the entire Indian Haj mission team are also stationed at Arafat to assist pilgrims.

Government Greetings and Diplomatic Engagement

Union Minister for Parliamentary and Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju extended wishes to pilgrims on the occasion. 'On the very solemn occasion of Haj pilgrims assembling at the sacred plains of Arafat for the core rituals of Hajj 2026, I convey my heartfelt greetings and prayers to all the Hajis. May this sacred journey further strengthen the values of compassion, harmony and unity among all humanity,' Rijiju posted on X.

Earlier on Sunday, Ambassador Khan met Rahim Khan, Karnataka's Minister for Municipal Administration and Haj, in Mecca, briefing him on preparedness for the core Haj period. On Saturday, the Ambassador visited Mecca, met pilgrims, reviewed logistics with coordinators and medical teams, and assessed readiness for pilgrim movement to Mina.

Scale and Context of Haj 2026

More than 1.5 million pilgrims have converged on Mecca for this year's annual Haj, one of the largest religious gatherings on earth. This year's pilgrimage takes place amid widespread hopes for a resolution to the ongoing conflict in West Asia, lending an additional layer of significance to the prayers offered at Arafat. Notably, the smooth movement of Indian pilgrims reflects months of advance coordination between the Indian Embassy in Riyadh, the Consulate General in Jeddah, and Saudi authorities.
