Is India Becoming a Global Leader in Renewable Energy Expansion?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
United Nations, Feb 17 (NationPress) As India is recognized as a global leader in renewable energy expansion, the UN is convening a roundtable on this pivotal issue, which is a top priority for Secretary-General Antonio Guterres during his visit to New Delhi, according to his spokesperson Stephane Dujarric.
The gathering will include senior representatives from industry, finance, policy, and civil society to address renewable energy and the ongoing energy transition, highlighting India's prominent role.
Dujarric indicated that this meeting is part of Guterres' ongoing efforts to promote a faster, fairer, and more inclusive global energy transition, in line with the Paris Agreement.
The agenda aims to outline tangible actions in various domains, such as renewable energy development, enhancing grid infrastructure, storage solutions, and investment mobilization.
India is dedicated to decreasing its GDP emissions intensity of greenhouse gases by 2030 to 45% below 2005 levels, increasing its non-fossil fuel electricity capacity to 50%, and establishing a carbon sink of between 2.5 billion and 3 billion tonnes.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated last week that India has already accomplished nearly two-thirds of its nationally determined contributions in combating climate change, achieving this milestone four years ahead of schedule.
She emphasized that India is self-funding its fight against climate change and deploying its own technology, as articulated at the Munich Security Conference.
“Six years ago, we were allocating approximately 3.7% of our GDP towards climate action. Currently, that figure is around 5.6%,” she added.
“We are not waiting for external financing and technology, although it is essential,” she noted.
Guterres is in India to participate in the AI Impact Summit 2026, a significant global event focused on artificial intelligence, marking the first occurrence of such a large-scale gathering in the Global South.
The summit, organized by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, is being held in New Delhi from February 16 to 20, aiming to gather governments, international bodies, industry leaders, academics, and civil society to explore the responsible use of artificial intelligence to promote sustainable development.
