Iran and Russia Engage in Dialogue Over Current Syrian Conflict

Tehran, December 1 (NationPress) Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov engaged in a discussion regarding the recent events unfolding in Syria.

During a phone conversation on Saturday, the two diplomats also deliberated on regional and international matters of mutual concern, as stated by the Iranian Foreign Ministry.

They conveyed their unwavering support for Syria's national sovereignty and territorial integrity, along with backing for the Arab nation’s government and military in their struggle against terrorist entities. They emphasized the need to tackle this issue through the Astana peace process, initiated in 2017 by Iran, Russia, and Türkiye to find a resolution to the Syrian civil war.

Araghchi reminded the global community of its duty to combat the malevolent threat of terrorism, characterizing the recent actions of the terrorist groups in Syria as part of a US-Israeli plot aimed at undermining security in West Asia.

He advocated for increased alertness and enhanced cooperation among Iran, Russia, and other regional nations, especially Syria's neighboring countries, to thwart the dangerous conspiracy and combat terrorist activity in Syria and beyond.

Lavrov highlighted the significance of maintaining coordination among all parties to fight terrorism and stressed the continuation of close consultations between Moscow and Tehran.

The Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and affiliated rebel factions initiated a significant assault in the countryside of northern Syrian provinces, namely Aleppo and Idlib, on Wednesday.

By Friday, they had made advances into portions of Aleppo city for the first time since being expelled from the city in 2016.
