Moscow, March 23 (NationPress) In a recent phone call, Sergei Lavrov and Abbas Araghchi, the Foreign Ministers of Russia and Iran, discussed the escalating tensions in the Persian Gulf, with Moscow calling for an immediate halt to hostilities.
A statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry revealed that Lavrov and Araghchi addressed the security crisis in the region, which has worsened due to what they termed the aggression of the US and Israel.
Lavrov emphasized the unacceptable nature of the US-Israeli attacks on Iran's nuclear facilities, such as the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, warning that these actions pose serious risks to Russian personnel and could lead to disastrous environmental outcomes for all neighboring countries.
“Both parties expressed alarm over the dangerous escalation of conflict instigated by Washington and Tel Aviv within the Caspian region. The Russian representatives highlighted the critical need for an immediate cessation of conflict and a political resolution that respects the legitimate interests of all involved parties, particularly Iran. Russia is committed to maintaining this position at the UN Security Council,” the statement indicated.
Furthermore, Araghchi extended his gratitude to the Russian leadership for their significant diplomatic and humanitarian support to Iran.
On Saturday, Moscow condemned the strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, branding them a flagrant breach of international law.
“The US-Israeli alliance continues its extensive assaults on Iranian military, civilian, and critically, nuclear facilities, showing a blatant disregard for civilian lives and potential radiological and environmental repercussions. Despite claims of the 'total destruction' of Iran's nuclear program following American airstrikes last June, the uranium enrichment facility in Natanz, which falls under IAEA oversight, was attacked again on March 21,” stated the Russian Foreign Ministry.
“This constitutes a serious violation of international law, as well as the UN and IAEA Charters, and the relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council and IAEA General Conference. The global community, including UN and IAEA leaders, must promptly provide an objective and unwavering evaluation of these reckless actions, which pose a genuine threat of catastrophic consequences for the entire Middle East and are evidently aimed at further destabilizing peace and security in the region,” it added.
