Jerusalem, March 22 (NationPress) The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced that its air force successfully intercepted two rockets launched from the Gaza Strip aimed at the city of Ashkelon in southern Israel.

Prior to the interception, air raid sirens were activated in Ashkelon, prompting residents to seek shelter, as reported by Xinhua news agency.

The Magen David Adom rescue service indicated that there were no reports of injuries or damage.

Residents in the area reported hearing loud explosions, with some individuals stopping their vehicles and lying flat on the ground.

As of now, Hamas has not issued a response regarding this incident.

On Thursday, the IDF reported that three rockets were launched from southern Gaza; one was intercepted, while the others fell in uninhabited areas. Loud explosions were also heard in Tel Aviv, but no casualties were reported immediately.

Later, Hamas' Al-Qassam Brigades claimed responsibility for the rocket attack, describing it as retaliation for Israel's alleged 'massacres against civilians.'

Israel resumed airstrikes in Gaza on Tuesday after a ceasefire agreement with Hamas that had been in place since January 19 fell apart. Israeli forces initiated ground operations in southern, northern, and central Gaza.

The Hamas-controlled media office in Gaza reported that the death toll from the renewed Israeli airstrikes has surpassed 590, with over 1,000 injured.

Earlier, the Israeli military stated that its troops are intensifying their ground operation in southern Gaza, advancing into the Shabura refugee camp in Rafah.

"Troops began ground activities in the Shabura area of Rafah," the military said in a statement on Thursday, noting that they had "dismantled several terrorist infrastructure sites" in the vicinity.

Meanwhile, Israeli ground forces continued their operations in northern and central Gaza, advising residents to avoid the Salah al-Din Road, the primary north-south route in the enclave, and to use coastal roads instead.
