Israeli Forces Successfully Intercept Missile Launched from Yemen

Jerusalem, Dec 17 (NationPress) Forces in Yemen launched a missile aimed at central Israel, setting off sirens in Tel Aviv and several other cities, as reported by Israel's military.

Israel's air defense systems successfully intercepted the missile, and "sirens were activated due to the potential for falling debris from the interception," the military stated on Monday.

According to Israel's Magen David Adom rescue service, no injuries have been reported.

As of now, no group has taken responsibility for the attack.

Since November of the previous year, the Houthi group, which dominates much of northern Yemen, has been launching missile and drone assaults against targets in Israel, purportedly to express solidarity with Palestinians amid their ongoing conflict with Israelis in the Gaza Strip.

Earlier on Monday, Israel's military announced the interception of both a drone and a missile originating from Yemen.

While the missile was intercepted, Israeli emergency services confirmed that five individuals sustained injuries while attempting to find shelter in Tel Aviv and other central regions of the country.

Since the start of 2024, a coalition led by the US has been conducting airstrikes targeting Houthi positions in various parts of Yemen in response to the group's actions in the Red Sea. These counterstrikes have occasionally been met with retaliation from the Houthis.

In a show of support for Gaza, which has been under Israeli bombardment since October 7, 2023, the Houthis have directed their missile and drone attacks at Israeli cargo vessels or those connected to Tel Aviv in the Red Sea, vowing to persist in their operations until the assault on the enclave ceases.

With the involvement of Washington and London, alongside rising tensions, the Houthis declared that they now regard all American and British vessels as military targets.

On December 9, a drone purportedly launched by the Houthis detonated on the top floor of a residential building in the central Israeli city of Yavne, fortunately causing no casualties.

In July, a Houthi drone strike in Tel Aviv resulted in the death of an Israeli civilian, prompting retaliatory airstrikes on the Yemeni port of Hodeidah.

The Houthis, who control a large portion of Yemen's population centers, have also frequently targeted vessels in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
