Jaishankar has wrapped up a highly effective trip to Brussels, engaging with leaders and foreign ministers from the European Union (EU) to explore the significant economic opportunities stemming from the newly established India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA). This agreement aims to enhance collaboration in various sectors including trade, technology, security, and connectivity.
In a post on the social media platform X, EAM Jaishankar shared insights from his meetings, highlighting discussions held with the EU Foreign Affairs Council and prominent European leaders such as Antonio Costa, Ursula von der Leyen, and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas.
“I concluded a successful visit to Brussels, engaging with the European Union Foreign Affairs Council, meeting EU Council President Antonio Costa and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and discussing with EU HRVP Kaja Kallas. Additionally, I met with various EU counterparts for separate bilateral talks,” Jaishankar posted.
The External Affairs Minister pointed out that the completion of the FTA signifies a pivotal moment in the bilateral relationship, asserting that it marks a turning point in India-EU interactions.
“The finalization of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) symbolizes a crucial moment in India-EU relations. It will not only unlock its vast economic potential but also reflect the strategic nature of our collaboration,” he stated.
To capitalize on the FTA's benefits, he emphasized the necessity for both parties to actively support one another in practical initiatives, particularly in trade and investment promotion.
EAM Jaishankar remarked, “The Trade and Technology Council (TTC) should be upgraded and redirected to enhance cooperation in critical and advanced technologies.”
He also stressed that mitigating risks in supply chains and boosting resilience are mutual goals, asserting that the FTA will foster stronger business connections in that regard.
Underlining the significance of talent mobility, he noted, “The movement of skills and talent is crucial. The establishment of the Legal Gateway Office in India is a noteworthy development.” He added that both parties share a vested interest in advancing Global Capability Centres (GCCs) in India.
Furthermore, EAM Jaishankar announced that both sides are committed to enhancing security cooperation by advancing the Security and Defence Partnership, with efforts to finalize the Security of Information Agreement promptly.
“Connectivity remains a key focus in our agenda. We will collaborate to bring practical implementations to IMEC and similar initiatives,” he said.
He also remarked that in an era where multilateralism faces challenges, India and the EU will work towards strengthening their institutions and practices.
“Our Strategic Partnership will be driven by continuous and regular consultations at the leadership level. Specific mechanisms will support these efforts,” added EAM Jaishankar.
“In today's multipolar and unpredictable world, the India-EU partnership will serve as a stabilizing and resilient factor,” he concluded.
