Jaishankar: Development cooperation key pillar of India-Jamaica ties
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Monday, 5 May underscored that development cooperation is a central pillar of the India-Jamaica relationship, following wide-ranging talks with his Jamaican counterpart Kamina J. Smith in Kingston. The two ministers reviewed the full spectrum of bilateral ties and identified new avenues to deepen the partnership.
Key Outcomes of the Bilateral Meeting
Addressing a press conference after the meeting, Jaishankar said, "Our talks today were comprehensive and very substantive, and we reviewed the entire gamut of India-Jamaica relations. We identified new avenues for further strengthening our partnership." Both sides signed several agreements and discussed the "effective implementation" of recently concluded Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) spanning digital transformation, cultural exchange, sports, and digital payments, with a focus on ensuring tangible outcomes on the ground.
Rural Livelihoods Project and Development Initiatives
Jaishankar welcomed the successful completion and handover of the Improving Rural Livelihoods project in Kingston Town in March. The project was supported by India with US$1 million under the India-UN Development Partnership Fund through the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC). "The project has directly benefited over 200 individuals and has a wider positive impact on thousands in the Kingston Town community," he noted. Both sides also explored the feasibility of establishing an artisan empowerment hub for Jamaica as part of New Delhi's commitment under the India-CARICOM Development Partnership.
Humanitarian Assistance and Health Infrastructure
Jaishankar expressed satisfaction with India's role in supporting Jamaica's recovery and reconstruction following Hurricane Melissa last year. On health initiatives, he said, "There was a symbolic handing over of what was one of the consignments of 10 BHISHM Cubes. We are also in the process of supplying 30 dialysis units to strengthen the health infrastructure in Jamaica." He added that this follows earlier humanitarian assistance where over twenty tonnes of relief material were delivered via an Indian Air Force plane, and that a medical team was deployed to build local capacities. "These efforts reflect our commitment as a reliable development partner for disaster response," he said.
Defence, Multilateralism, and Global South Priorities
The EAM stated that his discussions with Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness covered key regional and global developments, with both sides reaffirming close cooperation in multilateral forums — particularly on reformed multilateralism and priorities of the Global South. Areas identified for expanded cooperation include defence and security, healthcare, digitisation, agriculture, education, and infrastructure. Jaishankar expressed confidence that the outcomes of the discussions would contribute to a stronger, more dynamic, and trust-based partnership going forward.
