Jaishankar at EU Gymnich in Cyprus: India joins key foreign ministers' meet
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar travelled to Cyprus on Wednesday, 27 May to attend the European Union's Informal Meeting of Foreign Affairs Ministers, known as the Gymnich, held in the port city of Limassol on 27–28 May. India's participation marks a notable signal of deepening engagement between New Delhi and Brussels at a time when the India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) has recently been signed.
Frankfurt Stopover and India-Germany Ties
En route to Nicosia, Jaishankar was received by India's Ambassador to Germany Ajit Gupte at Frankfurt Airport. Gupte briefed the minister on the current state of India-Germany relations and sought his guidance on further strengthening the bilateral strategic partnership. The Indian Embassy in Germany confirmed the meeting in a post on X, noting that the Ambassador had also requested direction to deepen the India-Germany Strategic Partnership.
Who Is Attending the Gymnich
The two-day informal meeting is being co-chaired by Cyprus Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas. Beyond EU member states, Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister Prince Faisal Bin Farhan Bin Abdullah Al Saud has also been invited, according to a statement from the Cyprus government. On the evening of 27 May, Kombos is scheduled to host a welcome dinner for visiting ministers, which will also be attended by Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha.
Agenda: Ukraine, Security Strategy, and Regional Issues
On 28 May, the Gymnich session will take place at the Port of Limassol. Ministers are expected to deliberate on current and regional issues, with the war in Ukraine prominently on the agenda. Discussions will also cover strategic security and defence matters, including preparations for the new European Security Strategy, according to official statements from the Cyprus government.
Backdrop: India-EU FTA and Modi-Von der Leyen Meeting
India's presence at the Gymnich comes against the backdrop of a significant diplomatic milestone. On 17 May, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Gothenburg and expressed full agreement on the 'strong potential of India-Europe ties, especially in the wake of the signing of the India-EU Free Trade Agreement.' Von der Leyen described the deal as 'the mother of all deals' in a post on X, adding that the EU was working to have it applied within the year. Modi echoed the sentiment in a reply on his official X account. Jaishankar's Cyprus visit is widely seen as a follow-through on that diplomatic momentum.
