Sydney, Feb 6 (NationPress) Researchers from Australia have achieved a significant milestone by creating the first-ever kangaroo embryos through in vitro fertilisation (IVF), marking a pivotal advancement in conservation initiatives.

In a report released on Thursday, the research team from the University of Queensland (UQ) outlined their process of generating eastern gray kangaroo embryos by utilizing sperm injection into a mature egg. This method, known as intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), is similar to techniques used in human IVF.

Andres Gambini, the lead researcher, emphasized that this remarkable success could play a crucial role in preserving Australia's endangered marsupials, which include koalas, wombats, possums, and Tasmanian devils.

He stated, “Our goal is to protect the genetic heritage of these extraordinary animals for future generations to ensure they survive.”

Though the exact timeline is uncertain, Gambini remains optimistic that, with ongoing collaboration, adequate funding, and further technical improvements, the birth of a marsupial via IVF could be realized within the next decade.

The eastern gray kangaroo was selected for this research due to its population surplus.

Unlike traditional artificial insemination, ICSI only requires a single viable sperm cell to be injected directly into the egg.
