Beijing/New Delhi, Oct 27 (NationPress) On Monday, China graciously welcomed the travelers of an IndiGo Airlines flight that arrived in Guangzhou, marking the first direct air connection between the two nations in over five years.
“On the morning of October 27, IndiGo Airlines flight 6E1703 landed safely in Guangzhou. A warm welcome to China,” shared Yu Jing, a representative of the Chinese Embassy in India, on X.
The direct flights between Kolkata and China’s Guangzhou city recommenced on Sunday when the inaugural flight departed from Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport late that evening.
“Direct flights between China and India have now become a reality. The Kolkata-Guangzhou route launches today, while the Shanghai-New Delhi route starts on November 9, operating thrice weekly,” the spokesperson noted on X.
This initiative to reinstate direct flights was established earlier this year during a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, setting the stage for a broader reset in air travel.
In light of recent diplomatic engagements, IndiGo announced the resumption of daily, non-stop flights connecting Kolkata to Guangzhou effective October 26. The low-cost carrier also declared new daily direct flights between New Delhi and Guangzhou, beginning November 10, operated by Airbus A320 aircraft.
Additionally, China Eastern Airlines has revealed plans to resume flights on its India route, initiating direct services between Shanghai and Delhi starting November 9, thus enhancing opportunities for cultural exchanges and economic collaboration between New Delhi and Beijing. This service will run three times a week on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
On October 24, Guo Jiakun, spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, remarked that the restoration of direct flights between India and China represents significant progress in realizing the consensus reached by PM Modi and President Xi during their Tianjin meeting. He expressed China's eagerness to collaborate with India to manage bilateral relations from a strategic, long-term perspective and foster the ongoing healthy and stable development of bilateral ties.
“The resumption of direct flights between mainland China and India signifies the latest advancement in faithfully executing the vital consensus established by the two leaders during their Tianjin meeting. It also serves as a positive step to facilitate friendly interactions among the over 2.8 billion citizens of China and India,” stated Guo Jiakun during a routine media briefing on Friday.
“China is prepared to collaborate with India to approach and manage China-India relations strategically and over the long term, promoting the ongoing healthy and stable development of bilateral relations, ultimately benefiting both nations and their peoples while contributing to peace and prosperity in Asia and globally,” he concluded.
