Tel Aviv, June 24 (NationPress) Yair Lapid, the Leader of the Opposition in Israel, expressed profound sorrow on Tuesday following the tragic loss of civilians due to an Iranian missile attack on an apartment complex in Beersheba.
Four individuals lost their lives, and many others sustained injuries as Iran unleashed a wave of missile strikes against Israel shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire.
"Today is a particularly challenging and sorrowful morning with the brutal killing of civilians in Beersheba due to the missile assault from Iran. My thoughts are with the grieving families. I wish a swift recovery to the wounded and commend the rescue and recovery personnel—true heroes who save lives," Lapid stated in a post on X.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed the activation of defensive systems in response to this recent assault, with a ballistic missile reportedly impacting a building in Beersheba.
The ongoing conflict, which has now entered its 12th day, began after Israel initiated "Operation Rising Lion", targeting Iranian military and nuclear facilities. In retaliation, Iran has launched multiple waves of ballistic missiles into Israeli territory.
Later, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that Israel had accepted a ceasefire proposal from Iran, effectively concluding 12 days of intense conflict.
In an official announcement from the Prime Minister's Office, Netanyahu asserted that Israel had achieved all strategic goals of its military campaign, referred to as Operation Rising Lion, and had even surpassed expectations.
"Israel has accomplished all the objectives of Operation Rising Lion and exceeded them significantly. We have removed an immediate existential threat in both the nuclear and ballistic missile realms," the statement indicated.
According to the statement, the IDF had "secured complete air superiority over Tehran's skies, delivered a significant blow to military leadership, and demolished numerous key regime targets in Iran."
"In the last 24 hours, the IDF has aggressively targeted regime assets in the heart of Tehran, neutralizing hundreds of Basij operatives—the enforcement arm of the terror regime—and eliminated another senior nuclear scientist," Netanyahu's office detailed.
Netanyahu expressed appreciation to U.S. President Donald Trump and the United States for their support of Israel's military actions and for contributing to the elimination of the Iranian nuclear threat.
"Given the achievement of the operation's objectives, and in full coordination with President Trump, Israel has agreed to the President's proposal for a bilateral ceasefire," he added.
However, just prior to the ceasefire taking effect, Iran launched a final wave of ballistic missiles towards Israel.
One of the missiles struck a residential building in Beersheba, leading to the deaths of four civilians. Iranian state media later clarified that the missile strikes occurred before the official start of the ceasefire.
Netanyahu's office also cautioned of severe repercussions should there be any future breaches of the ceasefire, stating, "Israel will respond decisively to any violation of the ceasefire."
