Vilnius, July 31 (NationPress) On Thursday, the Lithuanian Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas officially communicated his resignation to the board of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party.
The Baltic News Service (BNS) reports that this announcement precedes a scheduled vote by the party's executive board.
Paluckas' resignation follows a warning from Saulius Skvernelis, the Speaker of the Seimas and head of the Democratic Union "For Lithuania," who indicated that his party would exit the governing coalition if Paluckas continued in his role.
In addition to stepping down as Prime Minister, Paluckas is resigning as the Chairman of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP). Mindaugas Sinkevicius, the Mayor of Jonava District and Paluckas' former first deputy, will assume leadership, as confirmed by party sources to BNS on Thursday.
Sinkevicius has stated that he does not intend to pursue the Prime Minister position following Paluckas' departure, assuring that the party will promptly nominate a new candidate.
The identity of the new Prime Minister nominee remains uncertain, with discussions mentioning Juozas Olekas, the First Deputy Speaker of the Seimas, and Inga Ruginiene, the Social Security and Labour Minister.
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda expressed support for Paluckas' resignation, calling it the only appropriate decision.
As per the Constitution of Lithuania, the entire Cabinet must resign alongside the Prime Minister.
Since Paluckas is referenced as Prime Minister in the current center-left coalition agreement, a new agreement will need negotiation.
Paluckas' resignation comes amidst two pre-trial investigations concerning his business activities and controversies related to his business associations and unpaid damages to the Vilnius municipality.
He stated that he does not believe he has committed serious errors but wishes to prevent the governing coalition and cabinet from becoming entangled in the political scandals surrounding him.
"Given how these escalating scandals are hindering government operations, I believe I cannot allow our ruling coalition and cabinet to fall victim to these controversies. Therefore, I have made a prompt and decisive choice," Paluckas said in a statement released by the party.
