Vilnius, Aug 15 (NationPress) - The President of Lithuania, Gitanas Nauseda, has officially put forth the nomination of Inga Ruginiene, a member of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP), for the role of Prime Minister to the Seimas, the country’s Parliament, as announced by the Presidential Office.
On Thursday, Juozas Olekas, the first Deputy Speaker of the Seimas, indicated that the Board of the Seimas is anticipated to make a decision on Monday regarding the scheduling of an extraordinary session to validate the nomination, according to the Baltic News Service (BNS).
Upon confirmation, Ruginiene will have a maximum of 15 days to present a Cabinet and government agenda that has been agreed upon with the President, as reported by the Xinhua news agency.
This program will also need to secure approval from the Parliament.
Nauseda shared with LRT TV that the available information thus far suggests that Ruginiene will "successfully fulfill her duties" as Prime Minister, although he noted that her background necessitates "increased scrutiny".
He shared that their initial meeting lasted an extended two hours, during which he relied on her responses for clarification on certain aspects of her personal history.
Public scrutiny has surrounded Ruginiene, particularly concerning her connections to relatives in Russia, her visits there, her husband’s business interests, and the rapid completion of her forestry degree.
Nauseda met with her on two occasions before forwarding her nomination to the Seimas.
The LSDP has been in discussions to form a new coalition following the resignation of Gintautas Paluckas as Prime Minister last week.
The financial crimes watchdog, FNTT, arrested Paluckas’s brother on Thursday and detained four others in a probe concerning businesses associated with the former Prime Minister.
As of now, no charges have been filed against Paluckas.
On July 31, President Nauseda noted that Paluckas had announced his resignation.
Reports from Lithuanian media stated that on July 30, investigators from the Financial Crime Investigation Service conducted a search at Dankora, a company owned by Paluckas’s brother’s wife. This company had received European funding and procured battery systems from Garnis, a firm linked to the Prime Minister.
Paluckas himself has denied any allegations against him.
It has been reported that amid a series of scandals, public trust in the government, particularly towards Paluckas, has dwindled.
Earlier this week, representatives from the LSDP convened with their current partners, the Democratic Union "For Lithuania" and the Dawn of Nemunas.
Ruginiene, aged 44, was first elected to Parliament in 2024.
Before embarking on her political journey, she held the position of chairperson of the Lithuanian Confederation of Trade Unions.
