Minsk, Jan 27 (NationPress) Current President Alexander Lukashenko is at the forefront of the 2025 Belarus presidential election, garnering 87.6% of the votes, as indicated by the initial exit poll released by the Belarusian Committee of Youth Organisations.
The exit poll revealed that the other four contenders received the following vote shares: Oleg Gaidukevich at 1.8%, Alexander Khizhnyak with 1.2%, Anna Kanopatskaya at 1.6%, and Sergei Syrankov with 2.7%. 5.1% of voters opted against all candidates.
A candidate is deemed elected if they receive support from more than half of the electorate.
The presidential voting commenced in Belarus on Sunday, with polling stations open from 8:00 a.m. (0500 GMT) until 8 p.m. (1700 GMT).
Voters participated at 5,325 polling locations across the nation, with approximately 6.9 million eligible voters, as reported by the Central Election Commission.
Early voting occurred from January 21 to 25.
The Central Election Commission announced on Saturday that 41.81% of eligible voters took part during the five-day early voting period designated for those unable to vote on the official election day.
Previously, the Central Election Commission had verified the establishment of polling stations for the presidential elections throughout the country.
Presidents serve five-year terms. A two-term cap, reinstated by 2022 amendments to the constitution, will apply post-election.
According to the law, Belarus’s president is elected via direct voting, and a candidate must achieve over 50% of the votes to be elected. If no candidate secures this majority, the top two candidates will enter a runoff, where the one with a simple majority wins.
Presidential elections are held every five years. In the last election on August 9, 2020, Lukashenko was re-elected for a sixth term with 80.1% of the vote.
