Caracas, Jan 11 (NationPress) Nicolas Maduro, who has taken the oath of office as Venezuela's President for a third consecutive term, has committed to ensuring peace, prosperity, equality, and a new democracy in the nation following his inauguration before National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez, as well as on the Constitution on Friday.
"I swear it on history, I swear it on my life, and I will fulfill it," stated Maduro, who subsequently received the presidential sash and the Order of the Liberators, which are symbols of presidential authority in Venezuela.
In his speech after the oath, Maduro urged for an extensive dialogue process in the country "to work together towards a significant constitutional reform that will further democratize Venezuela."
The reform, he mentioned, seeks to update "the principles of the Constitution based on the new economy and society," and "to protect the nation from emerging technological threats."
"Today, I will sign the decree to establish a comprehensive national commission for drafting the constitutional reform project, aiming for a process of democratization and defining Venezuela's new society and economy," Maduro declared.
On July 28, 2024, Maduro achieved victory in the presidential election with 51.95 percent of the votes, according to data from the National Electoral Council, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
Maduro served as the 24th Vice President of Venezuela from 2012 to 2013, as the Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2006 to 2012, and as the third President of the National Assembly of Venezuela from 2005 to 2006.
Starting his career as a bus driver, Maduro ascended to become a trade union leader before being elected to the National Assembly in 2000. He held multiple roles under President Hugo Chavez, including President of the National Assembly from 2005 to 2006, Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2006 to 2012, and Vice President from 2012 to 2013 under Chavez.
Following the announcement of Chavez's death on March 5, 2013, Maduro took over the presidency. A special presidential election was conducted in 2013, where Maduro was proclaimed the winner with 50.62 percent of the votes as the candidate of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela. He has governed Venezuela by decree since 2015 through powers conferred to him by the ruling party legislature.
