Kabul, July 13 (NationPress) Law enforcement officials have uncovered a significant stockpile of weapons and ammunition in Afghanistan's Helmand province over the last three months, leading to the arrest of 58 individuals, according to the Provincial Director for Counter-Criminal Activities, Mawlawi Abdul Satar Amin, on Sunday.
The discovered arsenal comprised 45 handguns, seven Kalashnikov rifles, nine various assault rifles, hundreds of projectiles, and additional military gear. These findings resulted from operations conducted in the provincial capital, Lashkar Gah, along with several districts throughout the past three months, the official reported.
All arms and ammunition collected have been recently submitted to the relevant authorities, the official confirmed.
Additionally, police have detained 58 suspects for involvement in serious criminal activities, including theft, armed robbery, and murder. The official emphasized that law enforcement will not tolerate any disruptions to public order within the province, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
In related operations, police in the neighboring Kandahar province also seized arms, including 13 AK-47 rifles and six rocket launchers, on Saturday.
Earlier, on July 5, counter-terrorism forces discovered over 100 firearms during a series of operations in the same province over a two-month period, according to a statement from the Ministry of Interior Affairs.
The operations led to the recovery of 105 various assault rifles, including 14 Kalashnikov stocks, 63 handguns, a rocket-propelled grenade, several machine guns, and more than 3,000 rounds of light and heavy ammunition, as detailed in the statement published on the Ministry's X account.
Authorities have also detained multiple individuals for illegal possession of firearms and referred them to the judiciary for further actions, although the exact number of those arrested was not disclosed.
In similar operations, police recently seized six AK-47 assault rifles in the northern province of Sari Pul the previous week.
