Malaysian Authorities Detain Singaporean Couple Linked to Corruption After Nearly Two Decades

Singapore, Dec 4 (NationPress) Two principal suspects involved in a substantial corruption investigation were apprehended in Malaysia on Tuesday after evading capture for 19 years, as reported by Singapore's Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) on Wednesday.
The investigation concerns approximately $51.2 million, according to Xinhua news agency, which cited Singapore's news outlet CNA.
Ng Teck Lee, 58, the former CEO of the electronics recycling company Citiraya, alongside his wife, Thor Chwee Hwa, 55, were taken into custody by Malaysian authorities and subsequently handed over to the CPIB on the same day.
The couple had fled Singapore in 2005 when the CPIB initiated its investigation into the case.
Ng is charged with criminal breach of trust for misappropriating electronic scrap materials that were entrusted to Citiraya. It is alleged that he instructed employees not to crush the materials but rather to repackage and export them. Thor is facing charges for her role in helping to conceal the proceeds of Ng's illicit activities.
Ongoing investigations by the CPIB into this case continue.
