Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 21 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva engaged in high-level discussions on Saturday at Hyderabad House in New Delhi.
The discussions aimed to enhance collaboration between the two countries in sectors such as trade, economy, education, investment, digitalisation, the Global South, and various multilateral topics.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had previously indicated that PM Modi and President Lula would be reviewing the entire spectrum of bilateral relations.
"The Prime Minister is set to host a lunch in honor of the visiting leader. The two dignitaries will also discuss significant regional and global matters of shared interest, including collaboration within multilateral frameworks, reforming multilateralism, global governance, and issues pertinent to the Global South," the ministry stated.
Earlier that day, President Lula paid respects to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat.
External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar also met with President Lula to explore ways to advance the Strategic Partnership between both nations.
The EAM expressed optimism that President Lula's meetings with PM Modi later that day would provide new momentum to the bilateral relationship.
Following their meeting, EAM Jaishankar tweeted, "Honored to meet with President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva of Brazil, who is visiting India on a State Visit. I greatly value his warm sentiments and guidance on enhancing our Strategic Partnership."
President Lula arrived in India on February 18 to attend the 2nd AI Impact Summit.
He is accompanied by around 14 ministers and a significant delegation of top Brazilian CEOs. The accompanying ministers are scheduled to hold discussions with their Indian counterparts.
This marks President Lula's sixth visit to India.
"He first visited India in 2004 as the Guest of Honor for Republic Day celebrations and most recently attended the G20 Summit in September 2023. Both PM Modi and President Lula have maintained regular communication in the interim. Notably, PM Modi was in Brasilia for a State Visit from July 7-8, 2025, marking the first State Visit by an Indian Prime Minister in 57 years. The leaders also met in Johannesburg during the G20 in November 2025," the MEA noted.
India and Brazil enjoy a warm, close, and multi-dimensional Strategic Partnership, grounded in shared democratic values, strong people-to-people connections, and expanding collaboration across crucial sectors. The two large democracies have been Strategic Partners since 2006.
"Brazil stands as India's largest trading partner in the LAC region, and bilateral cooperation has progressively deepened in areas like trade and investment, defense, energy, agriculture, health and pharmaceuticals, renewable energy, critical minerals, rare earth materials, science and technology, and innovation, especially in Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), AI, space, and people-to-people linkages. Both nations share common perspectives on various international matters including UN reforms, climate change, and combating terrorism.
The MEA emphasized that President Lula's State Visit will enable both sides to outline a forward-looking agenda to further enhance their Strategic Partnership and deepen collaboration across bilateral, regional, and global platforms on mutual interests.
