New Delhi, Feb 18 (NationPress) Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva touched down in New Delhi on Wednesday afternoon, marking the beginning of his visit to participate in the AI Impact Summit. Upon his arrival at the Delhi airport, he was welcomed by Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita.
During this visit, President Lula is set to engage in discussions at the India–AI Impact Summit. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also conduct a bilateral meeting with President Lula. The ties between India and Brazil are characterized by a strong and diverse relationship, raised to a Strategic Partnership and founded on a shared global vision, common democratic principles, and a commitment to inclusive growth. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) noted on X that President Lula’s visit will significantly boost the India-Brazil partnership.
On Tuesday evening, as he departed for India, President Lula emphasized his intent to explore new avenues for cooperation between the two nations during his stay.
“At the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we are now heading to India. Over the next few days, I will partake in the Summit on the Impact of Artificial Intelligence and will explore fresh cooperation opportunities between Brazil and India. Later, we will continue to South Korea to strengthen our ties there, at the invitation of President Lee Jae Myung,” President Lula shared on X.
He also mentioned that a high-level business delegation would accompany him on this visit to enhance commercial relations.
“In 2025, the bilateral trade between Brazil and India surpassed US$ 15 billion,” asserted President Lula.
During his State Visit from February 18-22, President Lula will participate in the 2nd AI Impact Summit and will hold discussions with PM Modi on February 21.
“Both leaders will assess the full range of bilateral relations. The Prime Minister is slated to host a lunch in honor of the visiting dignitary. They will also exchange views on regional and global issues of shared interest, including cooperation in multilateral forums, reformed multilateralism, global governance, and matters concerning the Global South,” the MEA mentioned earlier.
President Droupadi Murmu is also anticipated to meet with the visiting leader and will host a banquet in his honor. Vice President C P Radhakrishnan and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar are expected to meet with President Lula as well.
Accompanying President Lula are approximately 14 ministers and a substantial delegation of prominent CEOs from Brazilian companies. These ministers will engage in meetings with their Indian counterparts, while the CEOs are expected to take part in a Business Forum arranged during the visit, reflecting the growing trade and commercial interactions between both nations.
This visit marks President Lula’s sixth trip to India, with his first visit in 2004 as the Guest of Honour for Republic Day celebrations, and his most recent trip for the G20 Summit in September 2023. Notably, Prime Minister Modi visited Brasilia for a State Visit from July 7-8, 2025, marking the first State Visit by an Indian Prime Minister in 57 years. The two leaders have also met frequently in between, including a meeting in Johannesburg during the G20 in November 2025,” the MEA stated.
India and Brazil enjoy a warm, close, and multifaceted Strategic Partnership that is rooted in shared democratic values, robust people-to-people ties, and expanding cooperation in key sectors. The two major democracies have been Strategic Partners since 2006.
“Brazil stands as India’s largest trading partner in the LAC region, and bilateral engagement continues to grow in areas such as trade and investment, defense, energy, agriculture, health and pharmaceuticals, renewable energy, critical minerals, rare earth materials, science and technology, and innovation, including collaboration in Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) and AI, space, and interpersonal linkages. The two countries share common perspectives on various international challenges, including UN reforms, climate change, and the fight against terrorism,” the MEA added.
The MEA underscored that President Lula’s State Visit will provide a platform for both sides to outline a forward-looking agenda aimed at further strengthening their bilateral Strategic Partnership and enhancing cooperation across bilateral, regional, and global platforms on issues of shared interest.
