Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 18 (NationPress) Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva touched down in New Delhi on Wednesday afternoon to participate in the AI Impact Summit. He shared a video on social media highlighting the splendid traditional reception he received upon his arrival in the Indian capital.
"Namaste, India! I've landed for another visit with a crucial agenda: fortifying connections, enhancing partnerships, and exploring the future of artificial intelligence globally. We're committed to fostering more cooperation, innovation, and opportunities between our nations," the Brazilian leader stated on X after being welcomed at his hotel.
Upon his arrival at the Delhi airport, he was greeted by Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita.
During his stay, President Lula will engage in the India–AI Impact Summit and hold discussions with PM Narendra Modi. The relationship between India and Brazil is robust and multifaceted, elevated to a Strategic Partnership, founded on shared democratic values and a mutual commitment to inclusive growth. President Lula’s visit is expected to significantly boost the India-Brazil partnership, as per a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
As he departed for India, President Lula emphasized his intent to discuss new collaboration opportunities between the two nations.
"At the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we are heading to India. In the upcoming days, I will participate in the Summit on the Impact of Artificial Intelligence and discuss new avenues for cooperation between Brazil and India. Following that, we will proceed to South Korea to, at the invitation of President Lee Jae Myung, further strengthen our ties," the President wrote on X.
He also mentioned a high-level business delegation would accompany him on this visit to enhance commercial relations.
"In 2025, the bilateral trade between Brazil and India surpassed US$ 15 billion," stated the Brazilian President.
During the State Visit from February 18-22, President Lula will partake in the 2nd AI Impact Summit and meet with PM Modi on February 21.
"The two leaders will review the entire spectrum of bilateral relations. The Prime Minister plans to host a lunch in honor of the visiting dignitary. They will also exchange views on regional and global issues of mutual interest, including multilateral cooperation, reformed multilateralism, global governance, and the Global South," the MEA noted previously.
President Droupadi Murmu is anticipated to meet the visiting leader and host a banquet in his honor. Vice President C P Radhakrishnan and External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar are expected to meet with President Lula as well.
Accompanied by around 14 ministers and a sizable delegation of top Brazilian CEOs, the ministers will hold meetings with their Indian counterparts. The CEOs are expected to participate in a Business Forum organized during President Lula's visit, reflecting the expanding trade and commercial engagements between the two countries.
This visit marks President Lula's sixth trip to India. His first visit was in 2004 as the Guest of Honor for Republic Day celebrations, and he last visited India for the G20 Summit in September 2023. Nevertheless, both Prime Minister Modi and President Lula have been meeting frequently in between. It is noteworthy that Prime Minister Modi visited Brasilia on a State Visit from July 7-8, 2025, marking the first State Visit by an Indian Prime Minister in 57 years. Both leaders also met in Johannesburg during the G20 in November 2025, as stated by the MEA.
India and Brazil share a warm, close, and multi-faceted Strategic Partnership, grounded in shared democratic values, strong people-to-people ties, and expanding cooperation across key sectors. The two large democracies have been Strategic Partners since 2006.
"Brazil is India’s largest trading partner in the LAC region, and our bilateral engagement has continued to deepen in sectors like trade and investment, defense, energy, agriculture, health, pharmaceuticals, renewable energy, critical minerals, rare earth materials, science and technology, and innovation, including collaboration in Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) and AI, space, and people-to-people connections. Our countries share common perspectives on various international matters, including UN reforms, climate change, and counter-terrorism," the MEA highlighted.
The State Visit of President Lula presents an opportunity for both nations to devise a forward-looking agenda to further strengthen their bilateral Strategic Partnership and enhance cooperation across bilateral, regional, and global platforms on issues of mutual interest.
