Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 21 (NationPress) On Saturday, External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar met with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to explore opportunities for enhancing the Strategic Partnership between their two nations.
Later in the day, Prime Minister Modi is set to engage in a bilateral discussion with the Brazilian leader. The EAM expressed optimism that the Brazilian President's interactions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi would propel the bilateral relationship forward.
Following the meeting, EAM Jaishankar took to X, stating, "I am honored to meet with President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva of Brazil during his State Visit to India. I value his warm sentiments and insights on advancing our Strategic Partnership."
"I am confident that his discussions with PM Narendra Modi later today will bring renewed energy to our ties," he added.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) mentioned earlier, "Both leaders will review the complete spectrum of bilateral relations. The Prime Minister will host a lunch in honor of the visiting dignitary. They will also exchange views on regional and global topics of mutual interest, including cooperation in multilateral forums, reforming multilateralism, global governance, and concerns related to the Global South."
President Lula arrived in India on February 18 for the 2nd AI Impact Summit.
He is accompanied by approximately 14 ministers and a sizeable delegation of key CEOs from Brazilian companies. The accompanying ministers will hold discussions with their Indian counterparts.
This marks President Lula's sixth visit to India.
"He first visited India in 2004 as the Guest of Honor during the Republic Day celebrations and last visited for the G20 Summit in September 2023. However, both Prime Minister Modi and President Lula have met frequently in between. Notably, Prime Minister Modi visited Brasilia on a State Visit from 7-8 July 2025—the first State Visit by an Indian Prime Minister in 57 years. Both leaders also met in Johannesburg during the G20 in November 2025," stated the MEA.
India and Brazil maintain a robust, multifaceted Strategic Partnership, grounded in shared democratic values, strong people-to-people connections, and expanding cooperation across critical sectors. These two major democracies have been Strategic Partners since 2006.
"Brazil is India's largest trading partner in the LAC region, and our bilateral interactions have deepened in areas such as trade and investment, defense, energy, agriculture, health and pharmaceuticals, renewable energy, critical minerals, rare earth materials, science and technology, and innovation, including collaboration in Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), AI, space, and people-to-people connections. Both nations share similar perspectives on various international issues, including UN reforms, climate change, and combating terrorism."
The MEA emphasized that President Lula's State Visit will provide a platform for both nations to establish a forward-looking agenda aimed at further solidifying their Strategic Partnership and enhancing cooperation on bilateral, regional, and global issues of shared interest.
