External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar met with President Lula, exploring avenues to strengthen the Strategic Partnership between the two nations.
The EAM expressed optimism that President Lula's discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi would inject new energy into their bilateral ties.
Following the meeting, EAM Jaishankar shared on X, "I am honored to meet President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva of Brazil on his State Visit to India. I greatly value his supportive sentiments and insights for enhancing our Strategic Partnership."
"I am confident that his discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi today will bring fresh momentum to our relationship," he added.
Earlier, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) indicated that PM Modi and President Lula would assess the entire spectrum of their bilateral relations.
"The Prime Minister will also host a lunch in honor of the visiting leader. They will exchange views on regional and global issues of mutual interest, including collaboration in multilateral forums, reformed multilateralism, global governance, and matters concerning the Global South," the Ministry stated.
President Lula's visit to India commenced on February 18, coinciding with the 2nd AI Impact Summit.
He is accompanied by approximately 14 ministers and a significant delegation of leading CEOs from Brazilian companies. The accompanying ministers will hold discussions with their Indian counterparts.
This marks President Lula's sixth trip to India.
"His initial visit to India occurred in 2004 as the Guest of Honor during Republic Day celebrations, with his latest visit for the G20 Summit in September 2023. However, both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Lula have been in regular contact in between. Notably, PM Modi visited Brasilia on a State Visit from July 7-8, 2025, marking the first State Visit by an Indian Prime Minister in 57 years. Both leaders also met in Johannesburg during the G20 in November 2025," the MEA noted.
India and Brazil maintain a vibrant, multifaceted Strategic Partnership, founded on shared democratic principles, strong people-to-people connections, and expanding collaboration across critical sectors. The two large democracies have been Strategic Partners since 2006.
"Brazil is India's primary trading partner in the LAC region, and bilateral interactions continue to deepen in areas such as trade and investment, defense, energy, agriculture, health and pharmaceuticals, renewable energy, critical minerals, rare earth materials, science and technology, and innovation, including cooperation in Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) and AI, space, and people-to-people connections. The two nations share aligned perspectives on various international matters, including UN reforms, climate change, and the fight against terrorism.
The MEA emphasized that President Lula's State Visit will create an opportunity for both parties to outline a forward-thinking agenda aimed at further enhancing their bilateral Strategic Partnership and intensifying cooperation on bilateral, regional, and global platforms concerning issues of shared interest.
