Port Louis, March 11 (NationPress) In a meaningful act that further enhances the historical and civilizational bonds between India and Mauritius, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Mauritius President Dharam Gokhool in Port Louis on Tuesday, presenting him with the sacred Ganga water from the Maha Kumbh, which concluded on February 26, attracting over 660 million pilgrims at the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj, marking it as the largest human gathering in history.
Gokhool was unanimously chosen as the new President of Mauritius in December, taking over from Prithvirajsing Roopun, whose term ended on December 2, 2024.
A seasoned politician, Gokhool has served as the Minister of Education and has a notable career encompassing academia, public service, and politics. He is also hosting a State lunch in honor of the visiting Indian PM.
Upon arriving in the Indian Ocean nation for a two-day State visit at the invitation of Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam, PM Modi began his engagements by paying tribute to Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, the first Prime Minister and founding father of Mauritius, at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden in Port Louis. He also honored former President and Prime Minister of Mauritius, Sir Anerood Jugnauth.
"I paid homage to Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam and Sir Anerood Jugnauth, two great leaders who significantly contributed to the progress of Mauritius," PM Modi shared on X.
The Prime Minister laid a wreath at the memorial and planted a tree alongside Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam.
"I am grateful for the thoughtful gesture from my friend, Prime Minister Dr. Navin Ramgoolam, in participating in 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' — a tribute to nature, motherhood, and sustainability. His support symbolizes our shared commitment to a greener and better future," he expressed.
Before engaging in a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Ramgoolam later in the evening, PM Modi will connect with the Indian diaspora in Mauritius. Prime Minister Ramgoolam will also host a State banquet in honor of PM Modi on Tuesday evening.
On the second and final day of his visit, Prime Minister Modi will attend the celebrations of the 57th National Day of Mauritius as the chief guest.
This marks PM Modi's first visit to Mauritius since 2015, when he articulated India's Vision SAGAR - Security and Growth for All in the Region - which, alongside the 'Neighbourhood First' policy, 'Act East' policy, 'Think West' policy, and 'Connect Central Asia' policy, continues to shape New Delhi's approach to its neighbors while reinforcing historical and civilizational ties.
Amid various events, PM Modi is also expected to meet leaders from several political parties in Mauritius.
