Johannesburg, Nov 22 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in a brief yet significant meeting with his Italian counterpart, Giorgia Meloni, just prior to the commencement of the G20 Leaders' Summit at Nasrec in Johannesburg, South Africa.

During this interaction, both leaders exchanged handshakes and warm greetings, reflecting the solid relationship that has blossomed between India and Italy over recent years. PM Modi is among the esteemed global leaders present for the summit taking place from November 22-23.

The last time PM Modi met Meloni was on the sidelines of the 51st G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada, in June, where both expressed their commitment to reinforcing their nations' friendship.

In September, PM Modi praised Meloni as an “extraordinary political leader” who embodies both intellect and compassion, referring to her autobiography as a “Mann Ki Baat” or thoughts from the heart.

In the preface of her book, titled 'I Am Giorgia', PM Modi highlighted the deep ties between India and Italy, which he described as based on shared cultural values such as the preservation of heritage, community strength, and the celebration of femininity as a guiding principle.

Meloni reciprocated these sentiments, affirming the strength of the bond between their nations. She stated, “The words of Prime Minister Modi, whom I deeply respect, in his preface to the Indian edition of 'I Am Giorgia', move me profoundly. These are feelings I wholeheartedly return, underscoring the robust connection between our countries,” as reported by Italian news agency Adnkronos.

PM Modi’s preface to the book, noted for its personal and symbolic nature, connects his message to his friendship with Meloni and their mutual capability to blend tradition with modernity.

Moreover, PM Modi expressed gratitude to Meloni for her heartfelt wishes on his 75th birthday, showcasing his desire to further enhance the growing ties between India and Italy.

“Thank you, Prime Minister Meloni, for your warm wishes. I truly appreciate Italy’s friendship and look forward to strengthening it,” PM Modi shared on X in September.

This message followed Meloni’s birthday wishes for PM Modi, in which she conveyed her hopes for him to continue leading India towards a prosperous future while further solidifying the relations between their nations.

In a post on X, she stated, “Happy 75th birthday to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. His strength, determination, and leadership inspire millions. With friendship and respect, I wish him health and energy to continue guiding India towards a bright future and to strengthen our nations' relations.”

On September 10, PM Modi and Meloni had a telephonic discussion, reaffirming their commitment to deepen the India-Italy Strategic Partnership. They expressed support for the upcoming AI Impact Summit that India will host in 2026.

The Prime Minister also thanked Meloni for her assistance in finalizing the trade agreement between India and the EU and for promoting connectivity through the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEEC).

The two leaders discussed various regional and global issues of mutual interest, agreeing on the necessity for an early and peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, with PM Modi reiterating India's complete support for those efforts.

The camaraderie between PM Modi and Meloni has gained traction on social media, sparking the trending hashtag 'Melodi'.
