Mongolia's Coalition Government Officially Sworn In
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Ulan Bator, April 4 (NationPress) The newly-formed coalition government of Mongolia was officially inaugurated on Saturday at the State Palace in Ulan Bator. This government is headed by Prime Minister Nyam-Osor Uchral, the leader of the ruling Mongolian People's Party (MPP).
This coalition, which includes the MPP, the opposition Hun Party, and the National Coalition, is composed of a Prime Minister, 19 ministers, and 16 ministries.
During a session of Parliament following the approval of his Cabinet members, Uchral stated that his administration is comprised of a total of 19 members. Specifically, 16 ministers hail from the Mongolian People's Party, while two are from the Human Rights Party, and one from the National Alliance.
The change in leadership occurred after Gombojav Zandanshatar, the former Prime Minister, resigned last week at his own request, as reported by Xinhua. Local media suggest that his resignation was prompted by internal party conflicts or due to the convention that the ruling party's chairman also assumes the role of Prime Minister.
In the recent 2024 parliamentary elections, the MPP achieved a slim majority, claiming 68 out of 126 seats. The Hun Party secured eight seats, while the National Coalition garnered four seats.
Previously, Mongolia's State Great Hural, the unicameral parliament, elected Sandag Byambatsogt as the new speaker.
During a plenary session of the 126-seat parliament on Friday, 114 lawmakers were in attendance, with 76.3% voting in favor of Byambatsogt's election.
He succeeds Nyam-Osor Uchral, who took office as Prime Minister on Monday following the resignation of Zandanshatar.
Byambatsogt, aged 51, has previously been elected to parliament five times and has served in various significant government roles, including Minister of Justice and Internal Affairs, Minister of Road and Transport Development, Minister of Defense, and Chief of the Cabinet Secretariat.
