Kathmandu, April 15 (NationPress) The Nepali government has confirmed the release of a Nepali citizen, Amrit Jha, who was detained by Iranian security forces in proximity to the Strait of Hormuz. This announcement was made on Wednesday.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that they received notification via the Honorary Consul General of Nepal in Tehran, indicating that a local court had mandated Jha's release following his arrest in Iran.
“Efforts are currently underway through Nepal’s Honorary Consul General in Tehran and the Nepali Embassy in Doha to gather comprehensive details regarding the release order and to finalize the necessary arrangements for his return to Nepal,” the ministry elaborated.
Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal confirmed the news, stating that Nepali officials are maintaining contact with Jha and are facilitating his return.
“Amrit Jha, previously held in Iran, has been released. Our honorary consulate in Iran and the embassy in Qatar are actively communicating with him, and our team is working diligently to secure his exit from Iran,” Khanal shared on X on Wednesday.
Earlier reports indicated that Jha was part of a group of crew members detained near Qeshm Island, adjacent to the Strait of Hormuz, although specifics regarding the arrest, including the date and circumstances, remain unclear. He was allegedly employed as a seaman on a vessel in the crucial maritime corridor where approximately 20% of the globe's oil supply transits.

This pardon was granted following a request made by the Nepali government through its embassy in Abu Dhabi.
