North Korean Media Urges Nations to Break from US Amid Mideast Conflict
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Seoul, April 13 (NationPress) A Japan-based pro-North Korea publication has urged nations to steer clear of the United States to safeguard their national interests amidst the ongoing US-Iran conflict and Iran's effective blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
The commentary by Choson Sinbo argued that the closure of this vital waterway and fluctuating oil prices indicate that nations relying heavily on the US-led international framework are at greater risk of jeopardizing their own interests.
"The future remains unpredictable after a two-week ceasefire. However, it would be prudent for nations to distance themselves from a confrontational country that prioritizes its own interests and those of a select few allies, and to pursue actions that protect their own welfare," the publication stated.
North Korea seems to be reiterating its enduring position against the US-dominated global order while advocating for a multipolar world.
Nevertheless, the North's state media has refrained from directly criticizing US President Donald Trump by name. The Rodong Sinmun, North Korea's primary newspaper targeting its citizens, has also not covered the US-Iran war, according to Yonhap news agency.
Recently, South Korea's intelligence agency noted that North Korea appears to be distancing itself from Iran as it seeks to maintain diplomatic avenues with Washington—evidenced by Pyongyang's lack of condolences following the death of Iran's former supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
In the meantime, the Iranian Navy, part of the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC), has warned that any "misstep" by the "enemy" in the Strait of Hormuz will lead to severe repercussions.
This warning was issued through a post on the social media platform X, accompanied by drone surveillance footage showcasing the current status of the Strait of Hormuz.
The IRGC asserted that all activities in the Strait are under the complete oversight of Iranian armed forces, adding, "Any erroneous maneuver will ensnare the enemy in deadly whirlpools within the strait."
