Key Takeaways
Seoul, Feb 11 (NationPress) North Korea announced on Wednesday that a significant housing initiative initiated at a prior party congress to construct 50,000 residential units in Pyongyang is on the verge of completion, representing a crucial preparatory move ahead of another party congress scheduled for later this month.
The Rodong Sinmun, the official party newspaper, reported, "The objective of erecting 50,000 living units in the capital, established at the eighth party congress, is approaching its final stages in accordance with the schedule set by the party."
This housing project is a flagship endeavor of leader Kim Jong-un, revealed during the 2021 congress of the Workers' Party of Korea, aimed at tackling housing deficits and improving living conditions.
Initially, in 2021, North Korea introduced a scheme to construct 50,000 new apartments in Pyongyang over a five-year period.
As part of this project, 40,000 living units were completed in 2022 across Pyongyang's Songsin and Songhwa districts, with the Hwasong district set to see the remaining construction from 2023 to 2025, where the final 10,000 units are now nearing completion.
The newspaper commented that the project has produced 'a model modern city' featuring advanced infrastructure, extensive road networks, and green spaces established over five years.
"These grand and intricate constructions symbolize the significant transformations and progress of the remarkable era of Kim Jong-un," the newspaper stated.
Officials in Seoul speculate that the North Korean regime may finalize this key construction project prior to the ninth party congress, which is anticipated to take place in late February.
The regime is expected to outline its primary policy priorities regarding the economy, defense, and diplomacy during the party meeting, with the Pyongyang housing initiative likely to be prominently celebrated as a major accomplishment aimed at garnering public support, according to Yonhap news agency.
This effort aims to address housing challenges faced by Pyongyang residents, with the initial set of 10,000 units built in the capital's Songsin and Songhwa districts in 2022, followed by the construction of 40,000 units in four phases in the northeastern Hwasong district, including the 10,000 units now nearing completion.
